Green School
We are a Green School
Being part of Eco-Schools (or the Green School) is an important part of school life in Wales. The program aims to empower children to care for the environment and understand the importance of sustainability.
Here is a summary of what parents need to know about how the school works towards the Green Flag.
1. What is a Green School?
It is an international program (managed in Wales by Keep Wales Tidy) that encourages pupils to take the lead in protecting the environment. This isn’t just a classroom subject; it’s a way of life within the school.
2. The Eco-Committee (Pupil Voice)
This is the heart of the Green School. A group of children (usually from every class) are elected to sit on the Eco-Committee.
• They conduct an Environmental Review of the school.
• They create an Action Plan for improvements.
• They share information with the rest of the school and the community.
3. Key Topics
The school focuses on several specific areas. Examples include:
• Litter and Waste: Reducing, reusing, and recycling.
• Energy: Turning off lights and screens when not in use.
• Water: Not wasting water in the toilets/cloakrooms.
• Transport: Encouraging children to walk or scoot to school.
• Biodiversity: Planting flowers, creating "bug hotels," or growing vegetables.
4. How can you as parents help?
Support from home is vital to the school’s success. Here are some simple things you can do:
• Waste-free Lunchbox: Try to avoid single-use plastic packaging. Use washable containers and refillable water bottles.
• Active Travel: If possible, walk, cycle, or scoot to school. This reduces pollution at the school gates.
• Clothing Recycling: Many schools collect old clothes (e.g., "Rag Bag") to raise money for eco-projects.
• Talk about it: Ask your child what the Eco-Committee is working on this week.
